SWH Offers Free Exercise Classes

Classes taught in both English and Spanish by popular instructor Gladys Grullon

ROXBURY, March 19, 2013 – Senior Whole Health (SWH), a health plan for seniors who have both Medicare and MassHealth, will offer free exercise classes to residents of Roxbury and Jamaica Plain. Gladys Grullon, a well-known aerobics instructor and performer from "Seniors in Action," will teach the classes in both English and Spanish.
Classes will be held every Thursday from March 21 to June 6 between 10 and 11 am at the Boston Housing Authority's Armory Apartments in Roxbury.

"Healthy living and exercise is a life-long endeavor. I applaud the work of Senior Whole Health and their team in offering fun and healthy classes to citizens of Jamaica Plain and Roxbury. It's a terrific initiative that will benefit scores of residents," said Jamaica Plain City Councilor Matt O'Malley.

"We're delighted to offer this free program to residents of the Roxbury and Jamaica Plain communities because it helps advance our singular mission of keeping seniors healthy," said SWH Chairman and CEO Wayne Lowell. "Regular exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle that will maintain their quality of life and keep them living independently and at home."

"Exercise classes promote healthy living, help people prevent and deal with chronic diseases, and bring neighbors together to form strong social networks," said Grullon. "They're also a great way to get ready for walking and other outdoor activities available in the spring and summer."

The classes will include instruction on how to exercise properly and incorporate exercise into participants' daily routines.

About Seniors in Action
Seniors in Action started in 2001 thanks to three women who were concerned about the health problems caused by having a sedentary life and osteoporosis among seniors in Jamaica Plain. Cindy Engler, a nurse practitioner; and Margaret Noce and Julia Martin, two community leaders met and decided to start free exercise sessions for Seniors. After having interviewed many instructors they found Gladys Grullon, an energetic certified exercise instructor and health educator. Under the name "Use weights to prevent breaks" the first group started with an attendance of 14 seniors and met for 10 sessions at the Bromely Hall in Jamaica Plain.
