SWH Provides Regional Senior Buildings With Summer Farmers Markets In The Capital Region

ALBANY, NY (July 18, 2011) — As part of its ongoing effort to connect the Capital Region's elderly poor with nutritious produce, Senior Whole Health of New York (SWH) is coordinating regular farmers markets at senior apartment buildings throughout the summer.

The markets, held in each facility's parking lot and open through September, will feature an array of in-season organic fruits and vegetables ranging from apples, pears and melons to potatoes, broccoli and squash. Items will be provided by Waterford-based Petuske's Produce.

To date, the voluntary health care benefits plan has coordinated farmers markets at: O'hav Shalom (Albany), Kane Apts. (Rensselaer), Holyrood Apts. (Scotia), Troy Towers (Troy), Hudson Shores (Watervliet), Daniel P. Quinn (Watervliet), and Raymond Watkins (Saratoga). Seniors in each building will be provided with veggie dollars from SWH to help defray the cost of purchasing fresh vegetables and fruits.

Times vary for each week's market. Please call Roxanne Hansen at 518-225-0749 for the latest schedule.

"Last year's program was a tremendous success and we're delighted to be able to offer the program again this summer" said SWH Executive Director Margaret, noting that many SWH members are on food stamps and forced to go to local pantries before month's end. "This market is so convenient for seniors and provides them with an array of healthy produce from which to choose. It also encourages them to come outside, enjoy the weather and socialize with one another."

The summer farmers market program is part of a larger year-round program SWH is undertaking throughout Albany, Montgomery, Orange, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady and Ulster counties. This spring, SWH partnered with the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York on a three-month food pantry delivery initiative designed to provide low-income seniors in Montgomery, Warren, Washington and Ulster counties with bags containing a blend of healthy fruit and produce.
